How heritage buildings can beat the heat without air conditioning

Air conditioning remains an expensive and uncommon solution to summer heatwaves in UK homes while it is also generally very difficult to retrofit within older and especially our heritage commercial buildings. There are, however, much more financially viable measures which can be quickly taken to help mitigate high-temperatures and stuffy indoor atmospheres as window renovation specialist Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) is experienced in providing for its customers.

The multi-award-winning member of the Steel Window Association, ASWS has built up an expertise in repairing all types of fenestration including aluminium and timber frames and is regularly required to retrofit specialist glazing films as well as servicing different types of opening lights. And while many of the company’s major contracts are focused on Central London, ASWS works across the country on all types of buildings, both historic and contemporary.

Managing Director, Laura Mercer comments: “Of key importance is making sure that windows operate as they should and can be opened fully to provide adequate ventilation, including at night. Generally, this is a matter of competent maintenance: easing frames, removing excess paint and, if necessary, adjusting or replacing catches and stays.

“While we have sometimes been asked to install Brise Soleil for shading – such as on the ASOS building in Watford – a relatively quick and very effective intervention is installing solar film across glass, which can cut heat build-up by 50% while being 99% effective in blocking harmful UV radiation.”

Also, as Laura confirms, films can be multipurpose “Fitting film which offers both anti-shatter protection and solar control is now in demand to address Part K concerns, especially in critical areas like staircases. And unlike traditional toughened glass, using film means a broken pane will remain in-situ rather than falling and risking impact injuries.”
